Preparing for IVF: What Should I Focus on Before My Cycle?

The three months before an IVF cycle are an important preparation window. Learn how gut health, toxin exposure, stress support, and nutrient status can shape the foundation you bring to retrieval.

IVF works with the eggs you bring to it

If you are preparing for IVF, you have probably already spent a lot of time, money, and emotional energy getting here. You deserve to walk into your cycle with every advantage.

IVF can retrieve your eggs, but it cannot change the quality of the eggs you bring to it.

The medications used during stimulation help your ovaries mature more of the eggs that are already in development. Those eggs started their final growth phase roughly 90 days before retrieval.

In my eleven years in women’s health, I have seen how much those three months matter. These are the four areas I focus on with every woman preparing for IVF.

Gut health

Your gut is where every nutrient you eat or take gets absorbed. If digestion is off, the best supplement plan in the world will only go so far.

The gut also houses a large share of your immune system and helps regulate inflammation throughout the body. Chronic, low-grade inflammation is not the environment we want for developing eggs or for implantation.

Then there is the estrobolome. This is a group of gut bacteria that helps decide whether used estrogen leaves your body or gets recycled back into circulation. When it is out of balance, estrogen can build up, which matters when you are about to take medications that raise estrogen levels during stimulation.

A comprehensive stool test can show us what is actually happening, including:

  • Pathogens, yeast, or bacterial overgrowth
  • Digestion and absorption markers
  • Inflammation and gut lining health
  • Beta-glucuronidase, the enzyme behind estrogen recycling

From there, we can target what needs support instead of guessing. We include comprehensive stool testing in our 12-Week Fertility Program at Nuvitru for exactly this reason.

Detoxification

We are exposed to chemicals every day through plastics, personal care products, food, water, and air. Many of them are hormone disruptors, which means they can mimic or interfere with your hormones.

These compounds also create oxidative stress. In simple terms, that is cellular wear and tear, and eggs are especially vulnerable to it. Research has found environmental chemicals such as phthalates and BPA in follicular fluid, the fluid that surrounds a developing egg.

We start with a total toxin test, which can measure environmental chemicals, heavy metals, and mycotoxins from mold. That tells us what you are carrying so your plan is specific to you.

Timing matters here. We want this work done before your cycle, not during it, because mobilizing stored toxins is something to complete well ahead of stimulation and pregnancy.

Stress

Your stress response runs through the HPA axis, the communication line between your brain and adrenal glands that controls cortisol. When cortisol stays high for long periods, it can disrupt blood sugar, sleep, inflammation, and the brain signals that regulate reproductive hormones. Your body is wired to put reproduction on the back burner when it senses it is not safe.

Sleep deserves its own mention. Melatonin, the hormone your body makes during deep, dark sleep, acts as an antioxidant inside the ovary and helps protect developing eggs.

In our in-clinic fertility program, we add nervous system support with the Shiftwave nervous system chair and our Neuronova dopamine chair. We also have therapists at Nuvitru for women who want help carrying the emotional weight of this process.

Nutrient repletion

An egg is one of the most energy-demanding cells in the body. It contains far more mitochondria, the tiny power plants inside your cells, than almost any other cell type. Those mitochondria fuel the cell division that turns a fertilized egg into a healthy embryo.

Mitochondria run on nutrients. When nutrient stores are low, egg energy and quality can suffer.

Many women come into IVF depleted without knowing it. Years on birth control, restrictive diets, gut issues, and stress can all drain key nutrients.

The nutrients I pay the most attention to before an IVF cycle include:

  • CoQ10, which directly supports mitochondrial energy production in the egg
  • Folate and B12, in their active methylated forms, for DNA synthesis and healthy cell division
  • Vitamin D, which plays a role in immune balance, egg development, and implantation
  • Omega-3 fatty acids, which help calm inflammation and support cell membranes
  • Zinc, selenium, and magnesium, which support egg maturation, thyroid function, and antioxidant defense
  • Choline and iron, which you will need in good supply for pregnancy itself
  • Antioxidants such as vitamins C and E and glutathione, which protect eggs from oxidative stress

This is where testing beats guessing. A micronutrient test shows what your cells actually have to work with, so we replete what is low instead of piling on supplements you do not need. We have enough noise about ‘what to take’ on social media. We are data lovers here.

In our 12-Week Fertility Program, that testing guides a personalized compounded fertility supplement. You get what your body needs in the right forms and doses instead of a cabinet full of bottles.

Food still comes first. Supplementation can be an incredible tool when it is formulated correctly for you.

Working alongside your IVF team

This work is meant to support your IVF care, not replace it. Your reproductive endocrinologist is managing your protocol, medications, and timing, and that relationship matters.

Ideally, start this preparation at least three months before your retrieval. If your cycle is sooner, it is still worth starting now. Every week of support counts.

How Nuvitru supports IVF preparation

Our 12-Week Fertility Program was built for exactly this window. Twelve weeks lines up with the roughly 90 days your eggs need to develop, so you walk into your cycle with that full window used well.

The program covers all four areas in this article:

  • Gut: comprehensive stool testing and a targeted gut plan
  • Detoxification: total toxin testing and a personalized plan to lower your load
  • Stress: nervous system support, including Shiftwave, red light therapy, cognitive helmet, and molecular hydrogen sessions in clinic
  • Nutrient repletion: micronutrient testing, dietitian support, and a three-month supply of a personalized compounded fertility supplement

You also get Mira hormone tracking and regular visits with our clinical team, who read all of your results together. We offer the program in person at our clinic in Lakeway and virtually for women anywhere in the country.

You have already invested so much in IVF. These twelve weeks help you make the most of it.
